Our women’s health program is specially designed to cater to the individual needs of each patient.  A comprehensive evaluation will be performed, which can include an assessment of posture, pelvic alignment, lumbar and hip mobility, strength, soft tissue mobility, and special tests for the pelvic floor.  All treatments are one-on-one and out therapist will work to understand your specific needs and goals. Treatments are individualized and will focus on a whole body approach to help achieve your goals.

Changes During the Childbearing Year:

  • Increased blood volume can lead to swelling
  • Changes in hormone levels cause ligament and joint laxity, which can contribute to pain
  • Weight gain causes postural changes
  • Forward shift in the body’s center of gravity
  • Vaginal delivery: possible injury to the pelvic floor muscles, which can lead to incontinence, pain, and prolapse
  • Cesarean delivery: scarring and weakness in the abdominals

Includes Care For:

Pain during pregnancy:

  • Low back, pelvic, hip pain
  • Pubic symphysis pain/separation
  • Neck and upper back pain
  • Shoulder/arm pain and tingling
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Headaches
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Leg/foot pain, weakness, and/or swelling
  • Diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles
  • Musculoskeletal limitations related to bed rest (high risk pregnancy)

Postpartum:

  • Low back, pelvic, and hip pain
  • Pain associated with scars
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Postural education and body mechanics for lifting and breast feeding
  • Pelvic floor weakness with prolapse
  • Safe return to exercise

Physical treatment will consist of:

  • Manual Therapy: joint and soft tissue mobilization
  • Therapeutic Exercise: education and instruction in individualized exercise prescription for your specific pregnancy and postpartum needs. Exercise can consist of strength training, endurance exercises, flexibility exercises and balance training.
  • Bracing/Supports: to add stability and reduce pain/stress on the body to allow for greater functional mobility
  • Education: posturing training for breast feeding, lifting strategies, carrying infant/child in/out of car seat, safe labor positions to reduce current orthopedic conditions/concerns, relaxation techniques
  • Safe return to fitness and exercise after delivery
  • Your therapist will work with you to understand your goals and develop a treatment plan to achieve those goals through physical therapy.  Our treatments have an individualized, patient-centered focused. All treatments are one-on-one so you can expect to receive optimal care during each treatment session.
